“As far as my social responsibility is concerned, I consider myself a responsible citizen. So I can’t cheat myself and think of running away from my responsibilities , even if circumstances permit me or not.” – Vinayak Deokar
Vinayak Ganapat Deokar (Social Activist), Founder /President of Jeevan Mitra Pratisthan and Jeevan Mitra Education Society also follower of Mahatma Gandhi was born on 1st of February 1973 and raised in Hindu vadar caste in the slums of Vishrantwadi. In reality , at the age of 3 he was adopted by Late Shri. Ganpat Ramchandra Deokar and Late Smt. Mainabai Deokar from Navrange Anathalay, Pandharpur, a pilgrimage place in state of Maharashtra.
Vinayak’s foster parents used to work in a stone quarry to earn the family’s bread. At the age of 17, he lost his father due to illness. Forced by circumstances, he had to get married at the tender age of 17 to a 14 year old girl, who worked as a maid in apartments due to ill economic conditions. Life hit him hard and hence as a helpless husband he worked in hotels and initially sold lottery tickets in Vishrantwadi, Pune. Amidst all the problems, there arose one more, Vinayak lost his beloved mother who suffered from cancer and was supposedly his sole support to fight against all circumstances.
While Vinayak was struggling for the betterment of his financial conditions and somehow managed to educate his kids, suddenly one fine day on the 4th October 2001, he woke up to witness a chest pain followed by which he immediately consulted his family doctor, Dr. Ravindra Shetiya and Dr. V. L. Bhujadi. The reports were shocking. He was suffering from ‘Cardiac Disease.’ This incident shook him up top to bottom, compelling him to drown deep in depression. The thought of educating his kids and that they might have to face the same misfortune, gave him numerous sleepless nights and restless days.
Few days passed by, A mother with her 4 year old son happened to meet Vinayak suffered from a heart disease. She wandered to raise funds for her son’s treatment. Hoping that Vinayak would be of help to her, she consulted him. It was this day that he realized he was not the only person who suffered from this illness. There were several others. After thinking for hours together, he came to a conclusion that instead of just consuming medicines, lets’ fight against it and help such needy patients.
Before putting his thoughts to action, he approached few people who he thought would support him with this social cause. But unfortunately, many ranked first in suggesting him to look after his family and not indulge in acts like these, keeping in mind his financial status. All the rejection and tantrums built stepping stones on Vinayak’s path to achieve what he had thought about. He was in a state where no one and nothing could pull him down. Filled with positivity he went on to fulfill his dream with his friends Anil Thakur, Ajit Rane, Dr. Vicky Bhujadi, Naeem Shaikh, Hemant Sonorikar, Sunil Chandankar, Sanjay Agarwal, Rafiq Mullah, Deepak Mane and Dinesh Karkera and named it as “ Jeevan Mitra Pratisthan Charitable Trust” to financially support cardiac, renal, cancer patients and needy students.
