Who We Are

Founded on 14th of June, 2014 by Vinayak Deokar, Mahatma Gandhi School, is a free and supportive English medium school. We are currently catering to the education of 366 children of prisoners, daily wagers, domestic workers, single mothers and orphans residing in the slums of and around Yerwada in Pune.

We are continually endeavouring to uplift the underprivileged children of the society through means of qualitative education, as we trust, they are of paramount importance and form the essence of a country. We deem it our moral duty and privilege to be able to play a part in and sculpt the future of the disadvantaged.

What We Do

At the school, not only do we impart state-of-the-art education, we also provide books, uniforms, shoes, bags, stationeries, sweaters and conveyance completely free of cost. Significant emphasis is placed on skills and abilities thus promoting extracurricular activities such as Fine Art, Visual Arts(Painting, Music, Dance ) and Martial Arts so as to ensure holistic development of a child, giving them exposure to varied fields in life.

Our Mission

  • Provide free and quality education to the ones deprived of it and create hope for a better future
  • Eliminate gap between the underprivileged children and private school-goers.
  • Mould children into well-rounded, balanced and responsible individuals through sound educational practices
  • Tap and channelize their potential in the right direction
  • Drive them through and through from a state of helplessness to self-reliance

The Birth Of Our School

An extension of Jeevan Mitra Pratishthan Charitable Trust, established and founded by Vinayak Deokar in 2002 to provide financial aid to people suffering from fatal and other serious illnesses, Mahatma Gandhi School was brought into existence by Jeevan Mitra Educational Society.

In its active years, the parent organisation successfully disbursed 7 crores, covering medical treatment expenses in a span of 12 years. This incredible attainment of serving the needy led us to widen our reach and target the most vulnerable section of society – the children. Though education is a fundamental human right, it is also a far-fetched dream for those who struggle on a daily basis and can hardly make ends meet.

The survival strategies often include withdrawing children from schools or never enrolling them in the first place. Single mothers and wives of prisoners tend to pick up odd jobs and end up being stigmatized, ruling out possibilities of sending their children to schools of sizeable repute. Education is out of reach for children of those who earn measly wages and work their fingers to the bones too because of the exorbitant fee structure. Last but not the least, we aim to disrupt child labour practice which also is a factor in keeping children from stepping into school.

The Founder, driven by his passion and commitment towards serving the society, along with a group of doctors and other socially responsible individuals came together to build an institution to help nurture young minds and gather dreams shattered by inevitable circumstances.
